The Executive Chairman of Jos North Local Government Shehu Bala Usman, has warned those who harbouring any plan to cause violence and mayhem on innocent and law abiding citizens in the name of a protest over the outcome of tribunal judgments in the locality to have a rethink.
The Chairman who stated this in a statement in Jos, stressing that the Council is concerned about the reported threat to law and order by supporters who may be dissatisfied with the outcome of the various judgements at the National and State Assembly Petition Tribunal, sitting in Jos.
He explained that election petitions and their outcomes are part of the country’s democratic process which is anchored on the rule of law and the judicial system as the peaceful final arbiter of the social disputes
Usman noted that those who may be disappointed by the outcome of any judgment have the opportunity to exercise their right of appeal at the appeal court and where they will be bound by the final decision and outcome.
“As citizens, we are all bound by the rule of law which gives no room or opportunity for violence and threat to public safety, peace and security in our democratic contestantions for political power and right to govern the people” the Chairman observed.
While the Council recognizes the right to protest of citizens , the Chairman noted that the Council will not tolerate any illegal and unnecessary actions that will negate the rule and undermine their collective right to peace and security.
The Jos North Council Chairman, advised various political parties and its candidates to call their supporters to order and ensure that they avoid actions that are capable of disrupting public safety, peace and security in Jos North and its envious.
The Chairman assured the general public that security agencies have been properly briefed to remain alert and directed them to take all necessary measures to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
He called on inhabitants of the area to continue to be law abiding and go about with their lawful activities without fear for their safety as adequate measures have been put in place to nip any security threat in the bud.
