Says Sheikh Jengre action is tantamount to dragging Christianity to disrepute
A group known as the Plateau Forum for Peace and Unity , PFPU has condemned in strong terms the action of popular Jos-based Islamic Cleric, Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jengre for maligning the name of Christianity in urging adherents to vote for his preferred candidate Ahmed Goni of PRP in the fast approaching bye-election for Bassa/Jos North House of Representatives after the nullification of the election of Musa Aggah of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
As a Cleric of high repute , Sheikh Jengre ought to have known that Christians or Muslims are one before God , hence the need to give his blessings instead of deliberately chosing the path of instigation which has no bearing in the political landscape of the state.
A statement jointly signed by its Chaiman and Secretary , Yahuza Abdullahi and Ajang Aware stated that such a call by the controversial Islamic cleric is a divisive intent which is capable of plunging Bassa/Jos North into needless crisis and cause a rift between adherents of Islamic and Christian faith as well as other religions.
The group noted that Yahaya Jengre could have learned from the experience of the Past where such different pronouncements affected the outing of Dr Nentawe Yilwada in the 2023 general election which is a far better product than Caleb Mutfwang.
The Cleric further ought to have known that that the era of Muslims Muslims ideology in vying for elective office is gone as many Christians voted for Tinubu and believes in his ” Renewed Hope Agenda”.
They regretted that such calls coming at a time when the State is going through political tension as a result of the ongoing State Governorship litigation is not in the best interest of Plateau and peaceful coexistence.
” It is quiet sad that a cleric of Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jengre pedigree has reduced himself to the whims and caprices of some selfish politicians to the extent that he now determines who gets what and how”
The PFPU lamented that the uncomplimentary remarks made by the renown cleric on some perceived enemies is quite unfortunate and inciting and urged the general public to disregard such inflammatory statement emanating from him which is meant to further divide the people on religious lines.
The group observed that in view of the fragile nature of the Jos and its environs , such a statement is unbecoming of a self acclaimed religious leader whose role in the last general election attracted wide condemnation.
The PFPU advised Sheikh Jengre to consigned himself with propagation of the Islamic religion instead of picking candidates for elective office for the people, a situation they observed can cause disaffection among the people.
They group call on the security agencies to caution Sheikh Yahaya Jengre primitive ideology in our contemporary society adding that to avoid going through into another round of religious crisis in the State.
