ADOPTION OF CONTINUITY OF SERVICE AS STATISTICIAN GENERAL NATIONAL BUREAU FOR STATISTICS PRINCE ADEYEMI ADENIRAN OUR RECOMMENDATION TO PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU
BEING A PRESS CONFERENCE OF THE COALITION OF CIVIL SOCIETY AND HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATION AT BOLTON WHITE HOTEL AREA 11 GARKI AT 11:30am On 22th March 2024
Gentlemen of the press, Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, we bring you solidarity greetings from the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations For peace and human rights. We are a conglomeration of over 13 local CSOs and 8 International CSOs with a focus on ensuring transparency and accountability in public service and Governance in Nigeria and the sub saharan Africa. We have monitored closely the activities of Government Departments and Agencies since the begining of the year and after a painstaking process of review and investigation we have reached this conclusion that the National Bereau of Statistics NBS has displayed proactive leadership in its core mandate of providing the Government and Public with timely and accurate data for evidence based decision making.
It is common knowledge that statistics is an indispensable tool for national development, growth and planning because it is the foundation upon which policies are promulgated, it guides the decision of resource allocation and it provides the parameters for the evaluation of progress. The nature of the statistical landscape is constantly evolving thus the need for proactiveness and regularly enhancing capabilities to meet global best practice and ethical standards of statistical research. The goal of Statistical research is to ensure that data remains relevant to trends and societal shifts to guide Decision makers to make informed decisions in cognisance to the needs of their populations. We are excited that the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics is up and running to deliver its core mandate to the Nigeria State.
It is not far fetched that this feat has been achieved through deliberate action and frugal management of the material and human resources at the disposal of the Organisation by the team of erudite administrators headed by the Statistician General and CEO of the NBS, PRINCE ADEYEMI ADENIRAN. At the beginning of year 2023 the National Bureau of Statistics clearly set out targets for the year, this targets include the National Agricultural Sample Survey, continuation of the Nigerian Living Standard Survey, Quaterly Unemployment report etc. Findings from our research committee shows a precision-led approach in data collection and analysis was adopted by the NBS to accurately evaluate and present these reports, this is pivotal to set the stage for the rebasing of the Gross Domestic Product GDP as well as the reweighting of the Consumer Price Index CPI basket of consumables.
The NBS remains focused and steadfast in its resolve to build an effective and efficient National Statistical System and a world class National Statistical centre befitting of its repute as model Statistical research centre in Africa, this vision will ensure improved output when the requisite resources, technical knowledge and capacity are available. Continuous investment in the upgrade of Statistical tools ensures the security and efficiency of statistical process, it is this resolve that birthed the NATIONAL STRATEGY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF STATISTICS (NSDS), a system that shows the blueprint of how nations can systematically modernize its statistical infrastructure to meet the societal needs by ensuring statistical tools remain reliable and indispensable in its pursuit for National development in line with the vision of the RENEWED HOPE Government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led Government.
The NSDS 1 from its inception had a focus to strengthen the capacity of NBS and other national statistical institutions to improve capacity to produce accurate and timely data through the launch of centres in each of the 6 geo political zones of the country in line with their respective mandates. The NSDS 2 was developed to build upon the accomplishments of the NSDS 1 and to further enhance the statistical development effort including MDAs and Local Government Statistical units. This has led to better cordination between the Nigerian statistical system and the expansion of the states statistical Agencies from 14 to 22. This phase also saw the transition from manual paper data collection interviews to a digitized format via computers assisted interviews. The astonishing results of the NSDS 1and 2 has set the NBS on course to implement the NSDS 3 billed to start in 2024 with the aim to strengthen administrative statistics while providing data in new emerging areas such as Environmental and climate change and also the blue economy.
The Coalition of the Civil society organisations for Peace and human rights by this press release throws its support behind the Director General and CEO of the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics to flawlessly implement the third phase of the NSDS taking cognisance to his leadership prowess and competence as seen in his resolve to consolidate upon the success of his predecessors and in line with the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administration to make life easier for Nigerians. This Coalition therefore passes a VOTE OF CONFIDENCE on Prince Adeyemi Adeniran for his doggedness and proactiveness in leadership and administrative prowess to contine to lead the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics to heights and pedestal that will shine Nigeria’s light among commitee of Nations.
